The Role

Join ABC News’ Digital Story Innovation team and bring stories to life through powerful visual journalism. Collaborate with journalists, developers, designers, and video specialists to create engaging visual, interactive, and data-driven storytelling.


You’ll be working on highly visual, breaking news stories like our piece taking readers inside a nuclear bunker in Iran or explaining a daring heist at the Louvre through to more in-depth, original reporting showing the secrets inside the rare Tasmanian tiger specimens and using census data to explore the changing landscape of modern love in Australia.


The Job

  • Lead projects with reporters, designers, and data teams to create engaging digital and interactive stories
  • Develop complex interactive applications and data-driven visual presentations from concept to delivery
  • Pitch data and visual stories in editorial forums, contribute ideas to shape compelling digital news stories
  • Build interactive elements such as charts, maps, infographics, and visualisations using internal systems and external APIs
  • Integrate, test, and debug front-end functionality with applications and databases
  • Collaborate with designers and journalists to produce visuals for both breaking news and longform journalism projects.
  • Mentor and train teams in data visualisation and digital storytelling best practices

About You

You’ll be passionate about journalism and have a desire to use your technical skills as a front-end developer to bring data and visual stories to life.


You'll Also Have

  • Advanced skills in JavaScript, HTML and CSS, with experience building and launching accessible, cross-platform web applications
  • Experience with JavaScript libraries and frameworks such as Svelte, React, Node and D3 (or similar)
  • Strong knowledge of asynchronous JavaScript using JSON, CSVs, databases and APIs
  • Proven ability to create high-quality data visualisations, interactive maps, 3D models and other visual elements
  • Passion for visual and data journalism with a strong interest in storytelling
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; experience with statistical methods or tools like R is highly regarded
  • Skills in any of the following also highly regarded: Python, Three.js, Blender, QGIS, Figma, Illustrator
  • Ability to recommend effective approaches for content research, distribution and accessibility on digital platforms
