Avalanche Studios is developing the next generation of AAA open-world experiences, and we’re searching for a talented and motivated Principal Gameplay Programmer to join one of our flagship projects in beautiful Stockholm, Sweden.
As a Principal Gameplay Programmer, you’ll take ownership of the entire gameplay workflow pipeline—working hands-on with features ranging from core gameplay systems to animations and camera mechanics. You’ll collaborate closely with designers, animators, and fellow programmers to bring innovative ideas to life, implement engaging gameplay logic, and optimise performance for the best possible player experience.
Your responsibilities will include designing and architecting interfaces between gameplay systems and other key components such as AI, VFX, and sound. You’ll leverage and extend existing systems where possible, and build intuitive new tools and features when needed, helping to shape the future of our game worlds.

The Stockholm location
Our Stockholm office is situated in Södermalm, the beating heart of the city’s game industry. It’s a physical representation of our games – the lush vegetation of Just Cause and theHunter: Call of the Wild meets corroded metal straight out of Mad Max. It has everything you need to make it your creative base camp.

What You'll Do
- Anticipate internal or external issues and recommend solutions/best practices.
- Solve complex problems; take a broad perspective to identify solutions.
- Work closely with animators, designers, and programmers to understand their game needs, constraints, and intentions to design adapted solutions to realise the game design and vision.
- Combine the technical and artistic sides of game design and program gameplay systems that will make for the best visual representation.
- Analyse existing features in our engine, design, develop, and maintain the systems to properly understand technological limits and know what the engine can produce.
- Work in a development environment with shared code and contribute to continuous improvements to our shared tech.
- Monitor the evolution of different gameplay techniques and share your knowledge with various cross-functional teams across Avalanche.
- Proven ability to write clean, robust, and high-performance C++ code.
- Deep understanding of gameplay programming, including multiplayer games.
- Specialised expertise in areas such as gameplay systems, animation, or player control.
- Strong ability to work independently with minimal guidance.
- Experience leading teams and owning significant areas of gameplay development
- Skilled at mentoring and guiding programmers to deliver high-quality features.
- Demonstrates professionalism and upholds company values and standards of conduct.
