About the Role
The Maps Design team at Uber is looking for a Senior Product Designer with a strong background in internal tools and systems to create thoughtful, human-centric geospatial products that power Uber’s core experiences. You will work on building intuitive, efficient, and scalable tools that support map production, data visualization, spatial analysis, and decision-making for a range of internal users, from operations teams to engineers.
Maps is foundational to Uber’s business, from real-time routing and trip matching to autonomous mobility and logistics. The internal geospatial tools you design will directly impact how we gather, manage, and visualize mapping data at scale, ensuring Uber’s mapping platform continues to deliver reliable, high-quality location intelligence across the globe.
As a designer in this space, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to solve highly technical and domain-specific challenges. You will work across the stack, from crafting precise UI for complex workflows to designing modular systems and data interactions that scale with growing geospatial needs.
What You’ll Do
- Onboard to Uber Design: Learn how we collaborate and use design tools, how to design with the Uber Base system, and how to create with accessibility, scalability, and global utility in mind
- Understand your domain: Partner with engineers, PMs, and mapping experts to develop a deep understanding of our geospatial infrastructure, internal user workflows, and long-term platform goals
- Solve complex systems problems: Design high-utility tools for mapping specialists, operations teams, and platform engineers. Handle domain complexity, spatial data, and user-centric customization with clarity
- Lead end-to-end design work: Drive the entire design process from research and ideation to polished interaction design and implementation handoff
- Drive tool usability: Apply rigorous UX thinking to improve tool efficiency and user experience for a diverse set of internal personas with varied technical proficiency
- Run research to uncover pain points: Conduct generative and evaluative research to understand internal user workflows, identify usability issues, and prioritize design improvements based on real needs
- Design with systems and scale in mind: Build frameworks and modular UI components that ensure consistency, performance, and future extensibility
- Partner and collaborate deeply: Work alongside cross-functional partners including product, engineering, data science, and design systems to ship high-impact, user-aligned solutions
- Communicate clearly and frequently: Present your work with clarity, articulate decisions with data and user insight, and foster trust through transparent collaboration
Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years of product design experience, with a focus on internal tools, enterprise systems, or data-heavy platforms
- Proficiency in designing responsive web applications and working across desktop, tablet, and browser-based platforms
- Experience applying user-centered design principles to complex workflows or technical domains
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree in HCI, Graphic Design, Interaction Design, or a related field
- Portfolio demonstrating thoughtful, user-focused design across data tools, spatial interfaces, or enterprise applications
- Proficiency with Figma and prototyping tools; strong visual and interaction design craft
- Familiarity with geospatial systems, location-aware interfaces, or GIS platforms
- Ability to reason through systems complexity and translate user needs into clear, elegant tooling interfaces
- Experience collaborating with researchers, data scientists, and technical stakeholders
- Comfort designing within a large-scale design system and contributing to its evolution
