Job Title: Data Science Internship for wastewater treatment optimization
Company: Hypersoniq BV
Location: Amsterdam
Job Type: Internship, full time
Start date: As soon as possible
About Us:
Our mission: improve industrial wastewater treatment through data-driven optimisation and intelligence
Hypersoniq is located in Amsterdam and Delft, the Netherlands. We have a diverse and experienced team of professionals who are constantly working on advancing our innovations to achieve our mission. In addition, we leverage our research partners KWR – Water Research Institute, and Delft University of Technology to develop our technology further and validate our products.
We develop cutting-edge technology for industrial wastewater treatment where chemicals dosing is critical but hard to control through two products:
- Our innovative AI platform “INTANGIBLE” that uses and transforms your existing (sensor) data into a Smart Digital Operator that provides actionable insights and automated chemical dosing to save costs and ensure compliance
- Electrochemical sensor (under development) - a next-gen sensor based on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) for water monitoring
We are currently running our first customer pilots and will be commercially rolling out our software product “Intangible” in the upcoming months. We are seeking a talented Data Scientist/ML-Engineer intern who will be responsible for enhancing our data processing capabilities through advanced technologies such as machine learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Position Overview:
Hypersoniq applies AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics to industrial challenges. Our current focus is on optimizing wastewater treatment processes, using time series sensor data, computer vision, and AI-driven control strategies to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
We are looking for a skilled and motivated Bachelor or Master student to join our R&D team as a Data Science / Machine Learning Intern. You will work with real industrial datasets and learn how to apply AI not just for prediction, but for control and decision-making in real-world environments.
What You Will Work On
- Time Series Data Analysis
- Analysing and visualizing multi-sensor process data
- Applying statistical techniques for cleaning, filtering, smoothing, and anomaly detection
- Identifying inter-sensor correlations and detecting gradual performance changes
- Machine Learning & Control
- Applying supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning to industrial processes
- Experimenting with models such as regression, random forest, LSTM, XGBoost, and Q-learning
- Exploring methods to integrate control strategies (e.g., RL-based control, MPC concepts) with ML models
- Computer Vision Applications
- Using clustering and CNN models to classify and monitor industrial camera images
- Implementing feature engineering for image-based models
What You Already Bring
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Data Science, AI, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics, or related field
- Proficiency in Python and libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, TensorFlow/Keras, and/or PyTorch
- Experience working in Jupyter Notebook and documenting in Markdown
- Solid theoretical background in:
- Common AI/ML models (supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement learning)
- Statistics and probability theory
- Ability to work in a structured, methodical way from theory → application → validation
- Strong analytical thinking and willingness to work with complex, real-world datasets
What You Will Learn Here
- Applying AI to time series data in an industrial setting
- Integrating control concepts (e.g., RL, feedback loops) into ML workflows
- Designing and validating models for real-world operational constraints
- Working with a small, multidisciplinary team in an applied R&D environment
Why This Internship Is Unique
- Work with real industrial data from sensor networks and camera systems
- Direct impact — your work can improve efficiency and sustainability in wastewater treatment
- Mentorship from experienced data scientists and engineers
- Space to explore and experiment within active R&D projects
Benefits:
- Competitive startup internship compensation
- Opportunities for career growth and professional development
- Possibility to work flexible hours
- Be part of a fast-paced startup journey towards positive societal and environmental impact
- A collaborative work environment at a beautiful location in Amsterdam
- Access to cutting-edge technology and resources
How to Apply:
If you are passionate about pushing the boundaries of our technology and working on Data Science we encourage you to apply. Please submit your resume and a short motivation (in email) with your relevant experience and why you are a great fit for this role to [email protected].
Hypersoniq is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds to apply.
