Cloud DevOps Engineer
• Day rate: $800 (incl Super) + GST
• Contract duration: ASAP to 17/09/2025, plus 1x12 month extension
• Location of work: Canberra or *Remote (*anywhere in Australia)

Our federal department client, the Geoscience Australia, seeks to engage an experienced Cloud DevOps Engineer to work in a small agile team, developing and supporting scientific data processing pipelines, development environments and supporting infrastructure.
Practical experience with AWS, Kubernetes, Python, Terraform, DevOps and Agile practices is strongly preferred.

Essential criteria
1.Capabilities central to the role: • Experience with major cloud computing providers (ideally AWS) and with infrastructure as code (ideally Terraform). • Experience developing and managing containerised production workloads with Docker and Kubernetes.
2.Fundamental developer skills: • Experience in delivering and maintaining operational software. • Experience with Linux system administration and relevant scripting languages. • Experience with source control management and related processes. • Experience with Python and/or similar programming languages.
3.Supports and promotes positive culture: • Ability to work collaboratively and to operate effectively in a small team environment. • Able to perform work transparently and inclusively, sharing knowledge with and supporting other members of the team. • Experience undertaking work under significant and diverse demands on your time. • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
4.Solid understanding of the professional discipline: • Demonstrated understanding and experience with modern software development practices such as Continuous Deployment, DevSecOps and Agile. • Understanding of software architecture patterns and collaborative development tools and practices.
Desirable criteria
1.Additional skills in any relevant areas: Experience managing cloud security. • Experience administering databases (particularly PostgreSQL and PostGIS). • Experience curating data collections. • Experience working with scientific data. • Experience working with geospatial data or services. • Experience maintaining operational (and highly available) services.
2.Working knowledge of the specific tools in our technology stack: Familiarity with Argo Workflows, Apache Airflow, and KEDA Jobs. • Experience working with Bitbucket pipelines and GitHub actions. • Experience using Terraform. • Experience involving JupyterHub. • Familiarity with Flux, Helm, and Grafana. • Experience setting up AWS Lambda functions and associated IAM policies. • Development experience in Python.
3.High competency and effectiveness in professional interpersonal interaction • Previous agile experience as part of a multi-disciplinary team. • Experience collaborating with the open source software community. • Demonstrated ability to build professional relationships in a remote work setting.
4.Experience performing related work • Experience developing automated pipelines, performing batch parallel or distributed processing, or submitting HPC jobs. • Experience setting up automated monitoring and alerts.
