Mid-Level DevOps/Backend Engineer

We're seeking a mid-level engineer with DevOps and backend experience to establish robust infrastructure practices and contribute to our growing engineering team. This role is critical to transforming our infrastructure from manual processes to automated, reliable systems that can scale with our mission.

The Challenge

We're a mission-driven company serving over 100,000 people monthly across Australia, America, and other countries globally. Our team has built impressive technology, but we've lost sync between our infrastructure-as-code and actual systems. Developers sometimes resort to "click ops" (manually creating resources in the console), and we need someone to rebuild our foundation properly.

Primary Mission (First 3-6 Months)

Your first major project is to reestablish our Terraform infrastructure to enable full disaster recovery and confident deployments:

• Build infrastructure-as-code that can rebuild our entire system from scratch
• Create a proper staging environment (currently we only have dev and production)
• Establish comprehensive testing and deployment pipelines
• Update and improve our CircleCI pipelines
• Enable one-click cloning capability for disaster recovery
• Bring our infrastructure description back in sync with reality

Beyond Infrastructure

After establishing the foundation, you'll contribute as a backend engineer with an endless backlog of meaningful work:

• Building out systems and features
• Working on pipeline improvements
• Contributing to architectural changes as we scale
• Supporting our move from distributed monolith to microservices

Who You'll Work With

You'll collaborate across four teams working on:

• Mobile team: Patient-facing app
• Web team: Doctor-facing backend system
• Data team: Data analysis and insights
• AI team: Next-generation multi-agent AI therapy systems

This is a collaborative environment. You'll work alongside staff engineers and senior tech leads, pair with developers, participate in design sessions at whiteboards, and engage in peer reviews.

Tech Stack

• Cloud: GCP (we'll train you if needed)
• Language: TypeScript (backend and frontend)
• Architecture: Serverless distributed monolith moving toward microservices, event-driven, multi-tenant SaaS
• CI/CD: CircleCI
• Infrastructure: Terraform, cloud functions/lambdas
• Frontend: React/React Native

Must-Haves

• Stand at a whiteboard and explain complex systems clearly

DevOps Expertise:

• Strong Terraform and infrastructure-as-code skills
• CI/CD pipeline management
• Environment management (dev/staging/production)
• Secret management and secure deployments
• Disaster recovery planning

Mindset:

• Think about business value and user needs, not just technology
• Offer ideas and constructive feedback proactively
• Flexible and willing to work across domains (can't be siloed)
• Enthusiastic about using AI tools constantly (this is mandatory)
• Constructive in feedback, not rigid

Nice-to-Haves

• Multi-tenant SaaS architecture experience
• TypeScript experience (we can teach this)
• React/React Native knowledge (we can teach this)
• Cloud platform experience (GCP preferred, but we'll train)
