Do you enjoy working in a small, fast-moving team where your work makes a real difference? Are you not afraid to get your hands dirty, sometimes literally, to make things happen? At Monil, we’re redefining animal farming with data and technology to help farmers work smarter and build a more sustainable future.

Our virtual fencing keeps animals where they should be, improves welfare, opens new grazing areas, and helps farmers make better use of established fields. Right now, we have collars on more than 15,000 animals across Norway and the UK. Every minute, these collars send data to our servers, unlocking real-time and long-term insights.

Now we are aiming to become a world leading digital shepherd. In order to do so we need to shape our future data architecture and scale up our data science team!

In Monil, we don't work in silos. You'll have the chance to contribute to the entire data stack together with our experienced team. We strongly believe in sharing knowledge and constantly learning. As a Data Platform Engineer in Monil, you'll work very closely together with back-end engineers, data engineers and data scientists and be encouraged to contribute to the entire data, cloud and ML stack.

Your role

As a Data Platform Engineer at Monil, you’ll be part of the data science team, owning our data architecture and related tooling, as well as building pipelines that serve key business and analytics needs. You'll ensure our platform is reliable, efficient, and ready to scale, collaborating with data scientists, product managers, developers, and the commercial team to ensure our data infrastructure supports everyone’s needs.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a scalable data platform that supports ingestion, processing, and serving data for training analytical models, delivering insights in our customer-facing app, and internal reporting use-cases (e.g. customer support and sales).
  • Design, build, and maintain data pipelines that ensure reliable, high-quality data flow from source systems to analytical and operational destinations.
  • Handling schema changes in raw data by applying validation and versioning strategies (while working closely with the Software team!).
  • Develop self-service tools and data APIs for internal users.
  • Monitor, optimize, and scale infrastructure for cost-efficiency and low-latency queries.

We can offer

  • Working with large volumes of data in a startup-sized team. Already today, thousands of animal collars send time-series sensor data to our servers constantly, and we expect the number to grow fast.
  • Taking part in early architectural decisions: We’re at the beginning of building our data and analytics platform. You’ll help choose tools, define patterns, and shape how we work for years to come.
  • Skilled and enthusiastic colleagues who share a strong common goal.
  • A chance to join a promising and well-backed startup with big ambitions in an early phase.
  • Work together with experienced industry specialists in a variety of fields, from mechanics and electronics to embedded and back-end software. You'll be part of the whole journey – talk to customers, dream up the best solutions, and bring new features to reality.
  • Competitive salary and benefits.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master in Computer Science, Engineering or other technical and quantitative fields preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in data platform / data engineering roles, building and maintaining production-grade data systems.
  • Experience with large-scale time-series data and time-series databases, with proficiency in SQL (ideally PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB).
  • Understanding of data warehouse/lakehouse architectures, data modeling and schema design, ELT/ETL principles, and modern data stack tools (e.g. Fivetran, BigQuery and dbt).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (preferably AWS), containerisation (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker), CI/CD, and infrastructure as code (e.g. Terraform).

Requirements

  • Candidates must have the right to work in Norway or within the EU/EEA, as we are unable to support relocation or visa sponsorship from outside this area.
  • Fluency in Norwegian is preferred, but we make exceptions for the exceptional.
