Do you enjoy working in a small, fast-moving team where your work makes a real difference? Are you not afraid to get your hands dirty, sometimes literally, to make things happen? At Monil, we’re redefining animal farming with data and technology to help farmers work smarter and build a more sustainable future. Founded in 2022 by engineers from Teledyne FLIR, Silicon Labs, and Cognite, we’ve quickly become one of the leading challengers in this space.

Our virtual fencing keeps animals where they should be, improves welfare, opens new grazing areas, and helps farmers make better use of established fields. Right now, we have collars on more than 35,000 animals across Norway, the UK, and soon the USA. Every minute, these collars send data to our servers. Now we are aiming to become a world leading digital shepherd. In order to do so we need to scale up our data team!

We are a scaleup with enthusiastic colleagues who share a strong common goal. Curiosity, initiative, ownership, and learning from each other are core to how we work. Supported by the whole company, you'll play a key role in Monil’s journey in turning device and animal data into value both for farmers and the business itself.

Your roleAs our next data team member, you will join a small, experienced team responsible for data engineering, data science, and analytics. The team builds and maintains Monil’s data platforms (both for device and customer data) and pipelines, models deployed both on devices and in the cloud, dashboards for fleet monitoring, and ad-hoc analyses that help shape product development.

You will start by improving the stack we use today (PostgreSQL + dbt + timescale for device data, and Fivetran + dbt + BigQuery for customer data), both in terms of storage/query optimization, onboarding new data sources, and data product development. Part of your role will be to critically evaluate our current setup and explore alternative tools and architectures where it makes sense. Together, we will develop a forward-looking roadmap for the data platform as we scale to 100,000+ devices in the field.

You might be a great fit ifWe expect you to have a strong foundation in building and maintaining data pipelines, managing data platform infrastructure, and designing scalable data models. While your primary focus will be data engineering, we value people who are excited to work broadly with data. Some other personal qualities we are looking for are:

  • You like working along the entire data stack, from raw data → insight → production solution → value
  • You’re comfortable picking up new tools quickly when needed
  • You prefer shipping useful things fast over polishing something forever
  • You enjoy working in a small team where everyone owns a lot

QualificationsAt Monil we don’t hire purely based on years of experience and the tools you’ve used in the past. Demonstrated ownership, quick learning, integrity, and handling the unexpected is very important to us. If you’re someone who takes initiative and enjoys building things that matter, you’ll likely thrive at Monil. With that said, there are some things we’re looking for:

  • 2+ years of experience in data engineering for production systems, working with large data volumes, including data modeling, warehouse/lakehouse architectures, and ELT/ETL.
  • Familiar and comfortable with cloud platforms and modern engineering practices such as Docker/Kubernetes, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code.
  • Higher education in a technical field (i.e. computer science, engineering, math, physics).
  • Additional experience with IoT sensor data and other areas of the data field such as data science, ML engineering, or data analysis is a bonus.

Requirements

  • Candidates must have the right to work in Norway or within the EU/EEA, as we are unable to support relocation or visa sponsorship from outside this area.
  • Fluency in Norwegian is strongly preferred, but we make exceptions for the exceptional.

We can offer

  • Work with large-scale, real-world data. Today, tens of thousands of animal collars already stream time-series sensor data to our platform.
  • Opportunity to influence our data and analytics platform from an early stage, contributing to tool choices, establishing patterns, and shaping how we work with data for years to come.
  • Close collaboration with a small, highly motivated data team as well as experienced specialists across many domains, from mechanics and electronics to embedded systems and backend software.
  • Opportunities to explore and grow into adjacent areas such as analytics and machine learning if that interests you.
  • Competitive salary and stock options.
