We are looking for a skilled Backend Engineer with strong PHP and cloud experience to join our clients digital marketplace team.

You will play a key role in designing and delivering reliable, scalable, and cost-efficient backend systems as our client continues their rapid growth towards becoming one of Australia’s largest digital marketplaces.

You will work hands-on across backend development, architecture, API design, and delivery processes. You’ll also mentor junior/offshore developers, collaborate closely with Product and Engineering leadership, and help drive continuous improvement across performance, quality, security, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver backend features across PHP, Laravel, and WordPress.
  • Design reliable, performant, scalable, and cost-effective backend solutions.
  • Build and maintain REST and GraphQL APIs and stand-alone applications.
  • Optimise the performance, cost, security, and quality of the existing stack.
  • Mentor junior and offshore developers on best practices and architecture.
  • Contribute to the refinement of agile processes, coding standards, and documentation.
  • Provide technical estimates, run POCs, and de-risk complex features.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers on feasibility, design, and lifecycle planning.
  • Work with external vendors to expand platform capabilities.
  • Partner with Marketplace and Content teams to support operational and customer needs.

Skills & Experience Required

  • 6+ years of backend/full-stack experience with PHP.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Laravel and WordPress.
  • Experience designing and developing REST/GraphQL APIs.
  • Solid SQL and NoSQL skills, including ORM experience (Eloquent).
  • Exposure to AWS or GCP cloud environments.
  • Strong understanding of microservices, distributed systems, and ETL patterns.
  • Practical DevOps experience with CI/CD, automation, and observability.
  • Experience building high-traffic, secure, and scalable systems.
  • Strong communication skills, with proven mentoring or leadership capability.
  • Familiarity with Agile practices.

Preferred

  • Experience with AWS Well-Architected Framework.
  • Background in automotive, marketplaces, or media.
  • Experience working with external vendors and multi-team environments.
