Now expanding its footprint into Europe, Compass is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Backend) – European Site Lead to help establish its engineering hub in the region. This is a ground-floor opportunity to build and shape a world-class engineering culture from the ground up.

Role Overview

As the European Site Lead, you will play a dual role—both as a hands-on backend engineer and a founding leader of our client’s European engineering presence. You’ll be instrumental in setting up the site’s technical standards, mentoring new hires, and acting as the bridge between the European and U.S. teams.

Key Responsibilities

Site Leadership

• Shape the Culture: Build and nurture a collaborative, innovative, and inclusive engineering culture in Europe.
• Grow the Team: Partner with recruiting to attract and hire top engineers across Poland, Estonia, Hungary, Slovenia, and Portugal.
• Mentor and Lead: Provide technical mentorship, guidance, and performance support to junior and mid-level engineers.
• Bridge Collaboration: Serve as the primary connection point between the European and U.S.-based engineering teams.

Technical

• Design, build, and maintain high-performance, scalable backend services and APIs for the Compass platform.
• Lead the technical design and execution of complex engineering projects.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to execute on the product roadmap.
• Champion engineering best practices, ensuring clean code, proper testing, and solid documentation.
• Contribute to defining the technical direction of the platform and mentor engineers in backend excellence.

Qualifications

Site Lead Requirements

• Proven leadership experience and ability to foster a positive, high-performance engineering culture.
• Experience managing or working with distributed remote teams across Europe.
• Hands-on involvement in building and scaling new engineering sites or regional teams.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills across different time zones and cultures.
• Experience in technical hiring and recruitment processes.

Senior Software Engineer Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience (backend or full-stack).
• Strong proficiency in at least one backend language: Go, Python, Java, or Node.js.
• Deep familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS or Google Cloud), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines.
• Expertise in distributed systems, microservices architecture, and API design (REST/gRPC).
• Track record of leading projects and mentoring teams.
• (Bonus) Experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, Gemini Code Assistant).
