Junior UI/UX Designer (Freelance) – 3 Months – Brussels
Where Builders Build the Future
At RELYzIT Talent, we don’t recruit — we build. We unite the top 2% of builders — engineers, architects, creators — into a movement across Europe and the GCC. Vetted through our VECTOR7™ Signal Stack, you’re not just hired, you’re chosen. This is more than work. This is where builders build the future.
About the Role
We are seeking a Junior UI/UX Designer (Freelance) to join our client’s mission-critical project in Brussels. This is a unique opportunity to lay the foundations for a unified Design System that will power a complex ecosystem of applications used by both the public and internal teams. Your work will directly impact the daily experience of city agents and partners, shaping the digital backbone of a major European capital.
Why This Role Matters
Our client’s application ecosystem has grown organically, resulting in visual and ergonomic inconsistencies that hinder user experience and increase maintenance complexity. As a UI/UX Designer, you will be instrumental in creating a single source of truth for all interfaces, reducing UI/UX debt, ensuring accessibility, and enabling faster, more cohesive product development. Your contribution will set the standard for digital excellence and accessibility in the public sector.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Conducting a comprehensive audit and inventory of existing UI/UX across key applications, identifying inconsistencies and usability friction points.
- Defining visual foundations, including color palettes, typography, spacing systems, and other design tokens to establish a robust brand identity.
- Designing and building an accessible, scalable UI component library (UI Kit) in Figma, leveraging best practices such as auto-layout, variants, and variables.
- Ensuring all components are WCAG-compliant and responsive, with a desktop-first approach and seamless mobile consultation experience.
- Documenting clear usage guidelines for each component, integrating documentation directly in Figma or via external tools as needed.
- Collaborating closely with product management and development teams to ensure the Design System accelerates delivery and maintains consistency.
- Delivering all phases and outputs within a structured, phased project plan, from audit to final documentation.
- Working in a hybrid model, with a minimum of 2 days per week on-site in Brussels.
What We’re Looking For
- 1–3 years of experience in UI/UX design, ideally with exposure to complex, multi-application environments.
- Proven ability to audit and analyze existing UI/UX, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement.
- Experience designing and implementing Design Systems or UI Kits, preferably for enterprise or institutional applications.
- Intermediate proficiency in Figma, including advanced features such as auto-layout, variants, variables, and shared libraries.
- Understanding of front-end technical constraints and collaboration with development teams.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 or 2.2) and a commitment to inclusive design.
- Experience documenting Design Systems and creating clear, actionable guidelines for usage.
- Familiarity with desktop-first business applications; experience with mapping or cartographic applications is a plus.
- Ownership mindset, strong problem-solving skills, and a drive to deliver impactful, future-proof solutions.
- Portfolio demonstrating relevant projects (Design Systems, UI Kits, business or institutional applications) is required.
Technical Skills
- Figma (intermediate to advanced)
- UI/UX audit and analysis
- Design System creation and documentation
- Component library development
- WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards
- Understanding of front-end development constraints
- Responsive design (desktop-first with mobile consultation)
- French (native or bilingual proficiency)
- Dutch and English (nice to have)
Other Requirements
- Freelance position with a fixed 3-month contract (full-time)
- Hybrid work model: minimum 2 days per week on-site in Brussels
- Experience working with public sector or government entities in Belgium/Europe is a plus
- Ability to provide a methodological note and planning for the project phases
- Prepared to submit a portfolio and up-to-date CV
