✅ Eligibility: Currently living in Portugal and be legally authorized to work there

Available for monthly travel to Germany (~1 week/month)


About the Project

A leading global retailer is undergoing a major digital and e-commerce transformation, with e-commerce as a key growth driver. The Head of Engineering – E-Commerce will lead the modernization of global e-commerce and digital platforms, focusing on architecture, delivery, UX performance, and business impact.


This is a hands-off coding role requiring strong technical authority to guide teams, challenge architecture, and make high-impact decisions. The role works closely with C-level and senior leadership, product, digital, and data teams, bridging strategy and execution.



🧑 💻 Your Profile

  • 10+ years in software engineering, including experience with large-scale, distributed platforms
  • 5+ years in senior engineering leadership roles, with ownership of large organizations (150–300+ engineers)
  • Proven experience leading engineering transformation in e-commerce, B2C, or complex digital platforms
  • Strong background in modern platform architectures: headless, composable, API-first, microservices
  • Demonstrated ability to connect engineering strategy to business outcomes (growth, conversion, cost efficiency, customer experience)
  • Experience managing distributed teams and international delivery partners
  • High technical credibility across frontend performance, platform architecture, and complex system integrations
  • Hands-on exposure to: Headless CMS (e.g. Sanity) ; Commerce / experience platforms (e.g. Crowdpick) ; CDP-driven personalization and activation
  • Experience driving UX/UI optimization, experimentation, and continuous improvement
  • Exposure to AI-enabled use cases in production environments (search, recommendations, personalization, content automation)
  • Strong people leadership skills, including building leadership layers, setting standards, and aligning teams around change
  • Comfortable operating in global, multicultural, enterprise environments



💻 Technical Environment (What you will be working with)

  • Frontend / UI: React, Next.js (focus on performance/UX optimization; frameworks may vary)
  • Backend / APIs: Microservices, API-first architecture (language/platform flexible — could be Java, Node.js, .NET Core)
  • E-Commerce / CMS Platforms: Crowdpick, Sanity (or similar headless CMS and commerce platforms)
  • Data & AI: CDPs for personalization (e.g., Segment, Salesforce CDP), AI/ML for search, recommendations, personalization, experimentation
  • Cloud / DevOps: AWS or Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines
  • Monitoring / Analytics: Performance monitoring tools (e.g., New Relic, Datadog), analytics for UX optimization



⚙️ What You Will Be Doing (Concrete responsibilities)


Over the next 12–24 months, the focus will be to:


  • Modernize a large-scale e-commerce platform serving millions of users globally
  • Improve scalability, performance, and reliability to support international growth
  • Enhance UX/UI, checkout experience, and conversion metrics
  • Strengthen engineering governance, standards, and delivery predictability across distributed teams
  • Optimize internal/external engineering mix for efficiency and sustainability
  • Leverage data and AI for personalization, recommendations, and operational efficiency
  • Oversee a ~250-person global engineering organization across multiple countries and teams
  • Evolve both the technology platform and engineering operating model to improve speed, quality, cost efficiency, and alignment with business priorities
