Staff Backend Engineer- Payment Infrastructure

As a Staff Backend Engineer, you'll be a cornerstone of our Payment Infrastructure team, reporting directly to the CTO. Your role is much more than just coding—you'll be shaping the architecture, mentoring rising talents, and driving the evolution of our tech stack. Who you are:

You're a hands-on senior who writes great Java code and elevates the code quality around them.

• Leader and Mentor: Experienced in guiding engineers, helping them navigate complex problems and develop in autonomous teams.
• Architect at Heart: You are a backend engineer with a deep understanding of architectural design, capable of weighing trade-offs to ensure maintainability and scalability. You are adept at crafting RESTful APIs and event-driven architectures.
• Polyglot Developer: Besides being fluent in JAVA, you also have with experience with other languages like Python, Kotlin, Go, or C#. Fundamentals Matter: You have a drive to truly understand the systems you build, with a solid grasp of basic paradigms, such as concurrency and service-to-service communication, to design scalable, efficient solutions.
• DevOps-Savvy: Experienced in working with containerized workloads and comfortable deploying and monitoring applications in a Kubernetes environment.
• Cloud Native: You understand how to leverage cloud infrastructure effectively and can choose the right services to accomplish specific tasks. While our stack is based on GCP, experience with any major cloud provider will serve you well.
• Quality-Driven: Passionate about code quality, testing, and automation, always striving for reliable, scalable solutions.
• Communicator: You can break down complex technical concepts for any audience—technical or non-technical.
• Team Player: Proactive in collaborating across teams, advocating for your team's needs while aligning with the broader company goals.
• Outcome-Oriented: Skilled in planning and delivering features with a strong focus on predictability and impact.

What you'll do:

• Architect and Build: Design and develop reliable, scalable services and APIs that power open banking data and payments across Europe.
• Influence Across the Board: Report to the CTO and play a key role in shaping technical decisions across the department.
• Set the Bar High: Write and test code that meets the highest quality and security standards from the get-go.
• Document and Share: Keep clear, detailed records of your design decisions to support our async, hybrid work environment.
• Monitor and Optimize: Instrument your code for metrics, ensuring your services are reliable and efficient in the cloud.
• Lead by Example: Drive technical discussions, provide code reviews, and mentor fellow engineers to elevate our entire team.
• Collaborate to Innovate: Work alongside independent teams to build and support the Neonomics platform at scale.
• Modern Tech Stack: Engage with cutting-edge technologies—containers, Kubernetes, and the cloud—to create solutions that operate at a pan-European level.
