Frontend Developer

Midnight Mansion
United States · Full-time · Mid-Senior

Hello! This role is for someone who is interested in immersive, location-based, or interactive physical experiences. If you have built software that lives in the real world - connected to hardware, props, guests, performers, or physical space - we want to hear about it. If you have only worked on traditional web apps with no physical or experiential component, this is likely not the right fit.

Midnight Mansion’s mission is to bring more delight into the world. We design, engineer, fabricate, and install immersive, in-person experiences. That means everything from special exhibits to interactive environments that blend creative technology, mechanical systems, lighting, sound, and special effects.

We take ideas from early prototypes all the way through fabrication and final install. We build ambitious things and make them work in the real world, with real guests.

The Role

We are hiring a Experiential Software Engineer to work on our flagship in-person venue.

This is a full-time, in-person role based in Needham, MA.

You will be designing and writing software that directly powers physical experiences. Your work will run kiosks, drive interactive systems, coordinate devices, and support puzzles and dynamic environments that guests move through.

Responsibilities include:

  • Designing and implementing intuitive front-end systems
  • Building and maintaining distributed and concurrent systems
  • Integrating software with hardware, sensors, microcontrollers, and networked devices
  • Prototyping and testing puzzles, props, and interactive moments with members of the public
  • Debugging live systems that operate in real-world conditions

This is not just screen-based software. It lives in a physical space.

Who We’re Looking For

  • Have experience with immersive entertainment, themed attractions, interactive exhibits, escape rooms, experiential marketing, or similar work - or can clearly demonstrate how your background translates
  • Take ownership of problems and see them through end to end
  • Make decisions quickly and adjust when something is not working
  • Notice what needs to be done and move on it
  • Do not let questions sit - you dig until you understand
  • You enjoy building things that people physically walk up to and touch.

Qualifications

  • Ability to commute to our studio in Needham, MA
  • 2+ years of professional experience
  • TypeScript / React / Node.js / Next.js
  • Git or similar version control
  • Microcontroller / single-board computer experience (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Odroid)
  • TurboRepo / Yarn Workspaces
  • CouchDB
  • CI/CD pipelines
  • Graphic design experience (Illustrator, Figma)
  • Authorization to work full-time in the United States (we cannot sponsor visas at this time)
  • Genuine enthusiasm for location-based entertainment

Compensation & Benefits

  • Paid Time Off plus 12 recognized holidays
  • Flexible work hours
  • Medical, vision, and dental coverage
  • Retirement savings plan with employer match
  • Additional benefits

We really want to hear about your experience with location-based and immersive entertainment. If that's something you're passionate about, email [email protected] with the subject line Full-Stack Software Engineer Application. Attach your résumé, links to your portfolio / GitHub / relevant work, and include a short note about what you are passionate about building.
