Senior Backend Engineer (Node / AWS) – High-Scale Consumer Platform (Hybrid - 2 Days WFH)

Full-time | Sydney | $140,000–$160,000 + Super | High-Growth Product Environment

I’m working with a rapidly scaling digital media & marketplace company building high-traffic consumer APIs and next-generation platform services used by a national audience.

They’re hiring multiple Mid/Senior Backend Engineers (Node / AWS) to design, build, and scale distributed systems powering a high-traffic production environment. If you enjoy owning backend services, working deeply with AWS, and solving performance and scalability challenges at scale, this role will be a strong fit.

The Opportunity:

In this role, you’ll be a key hands-on contributor within a modern cloud-native engineering team. The focus is backend-heavy (approx. 70% build / 30% design), working across Node.js, TypeScript, and AWS to deliver scalable, reliable APIs and services.

You’ll collaborate with senior engineers to:

• Design and scale production-grade backend services in AWS
• Build and optimise high-traffic APIs serving a national user base
• Contribute to distributed and event-driven architectures
• Improve system performance, observability, and reliability
• Support AI/LLM-enabled service components within the platform
• Influence architectural decisions and engineering best practices

Technical Skills You’ll Need:

• 5+ years building backend systems using Node.js and TypeScript
• Strong experience designing scalable APIs in AWS (e.g. Lambda, API Gateway, event-driven components, or containerised services)
• Experience working with both SQL and NoSQL databases in production
• Practical understanding of system design trade-offs across performance, cost, scalability, and reliability
• Exposure to monitoring, logging, and production observability practices

Nice to Have

• Experience working on high-traffic consumer platforms
• Exposure to event-driven or serverless architectures
• Experience with AI/LLM-integrated services or experimentation in this space
• Familiarity with API performance optimisation and Cloud-based monitoring tools
• Interest in distributed systems and scalable architecture patterns
