About The Role
We are seeking a skilled PHP Web Developer to join our dedicated IT team. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting the development of database-driven web applications that enhance our healthcare services and administrative operations. Your primary focus will be designing, developing, and maintaining web-based applications that meet the needs of various departments within the university. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, develop specifications, and implement solutions that are robust, scalable, and secure. Additionally, you will analyze system interfaces, troubleshoot issues, and ensure optimal performance across different platforms and browsers. This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to innovative projects that directly impact patient care, research, and education at SUNY Upstate Medical University.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field, along with a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience. Proven expertise in PHP web programming, developing database-driven web pages, and applications with authentication mechanisms is essential. Experience working with PHP combined with MySQL/MariaDB or Oracle databases is required. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in responsive web design using HTML5, CSS, and related technologies, ensuring applications are compatible across various devices and browsers. Familiarity with cross-browser compatibility testing for browsers such as IE11, Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and mobile browsers is also necessary. Those with at least a Bachelor's degree plus one year of experience may be considered for junior-level positions with a corresponding salary structure.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with a Master’s Degree in Computer Science or a related discipline and five or more years of experience will be preferred. Additional competencies that are highly desirable include familiarity with Linux systems, including scheduled tasks and access rights management. Experience with Apache and PHP web server administration, including configuring httpd.conf, vhosts, .htaccess files, and PHP-FPM, is advantageous. Proficiency in PHP Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles, as well as familiarity with Bootstrap, jQuery, and JavaScript programming, will be highly valued. Experience developing APIs and integrating with RESTful and SOAP services is important. Knowledge of working with various data formats such as XML, JSON, CSV, and Excel, along with ensuring WCAG compliance, will set candidates apart. Experience with web content management systems, particularly Cascade CMS programming with Velocity or XSLT, and version control practices, will also be considered a plus.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain dynamic, database-driven web applications that support the university’s operational and research objectives. Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical specifications. Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code, ensuring adherence to best practices and security standards. Conduct testing and debugging of applications across multiple browsers and devices to ensure compatibility and responsiveness. Optimize application performance and troubleshoot issues as they arise. Manage server configurations and perform routine maintenance tasks on Linux-based systems and Apache web servers. Develop and consume RESTful and SOAP APIs to facilitate seamless data exchange with external systems. Maintain version control repositories and participate in code reviews to ensure code quality. Stay updated with emerging web technologies and incorporate innovative solutions to improve application functionality and user experience. Support content management system integrations and assist in implementing accessibility standards in line with WCAG guidelines. Provide technical support and training to end-users and team members when required.
