About The Team
ScienceDirect is the world's leading collection of science information on the web and Elsevier's flagship product.
The ScienceDirect UX team consists of 1 UX Researcher, 3 UX Designers, and 1 UX Manager. They collaborate closely with the wider organizations across ScienceDirect, Scopus, Engineering Village, Knovel, and the Design System team.
The team works as part of cross-functional squads, partnering with Product, Engineering, QA, and other roles while also collaborating within the centralized UX team and the broader Elsevier UX community of 70+ researchers and designers.
At Elsevier, we’re evolving how we work by integrating AI into cross-disciplinary teams, with UX playing a central role. This is an opportunity to shape new ways of working, collaborating across domains, and grow your skills as we learn and experiment together.
About The Role
As a UX/UI Designer, you will partner closely with product, research, and engineering in cross-functional teams to deliver user-centred solutions to complex challenges. You’ll identify problems, develop concepts and hypotheses, and design, prototype, and help test solutions with users.
You’ll collaborate with analysts, data scientists, and customer-facing teams (such as marketing, sales, and support), and use data and insights to inform your decisions. You’ll own the design work within your team end-to-end, while working with fellow designers and using the design system to ensure consistency across products.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with product managers and engineers to define the roadmap and backlog, and to ensure strategic alignment and effective working processes.
- Support researchers in conducting user research and usability tests to understand user needs and inform your design decisions.
- Ideate and prototype quickly and produce detailed design deliverables to ship your designs into production.
- Ensure your product designs meet user needs, support business goals, are technically feasible, and are consistent with our design system.
- Collaborate with designers within ScienceDirect and on other products in the portfolio to create aligned experiences.
- Help improve our design team practices, support other designers as needed, and engage with the design community at Elsevier.
- Demonstrated experience as a UX/UI or product designer.
- A portfolio that displays a range of your work to date, including User Experience (UX), User Interface design (UI), and ideally User Research and/or UX analytics.
- Attention to detail and proficiency in producing UX flows, design concepts, high-fidelity designs, and prototypes.
- Ability to collaborate with designers, product managers, and developers, and communicate persuasively to influence decisions.
- Experience delivering products embedded in a squad in an Agile environment.
- Enthusiasm and a willingness to tackle complex problem spaces, experiment with new tools, learn, and share with the wider Elsevier community.
- Nice to have: Experience with content-heavy products; designing for search, browse, and deep reading experiences
- Nice to have: Experience working in complex content ecosystems, information science, or library science
- Nice to have: Familiarity working with enterprise-level design‑systems
