Contract Opportunity: Cyber Security Specialist
Sydney | Contract Role | Hybrid
The Cyber Security Coordinator is responsible for leading and coordinating cyber security activities across Council, working at both a strategic and operational level. This is currently the only dedicated cyber security role, requiring a self‑driven professional who can evolve cyber governance and risk management frameworks while also supporting day‑to‑day cyber security operations, incident response, and mitigations.
The role operates in a fast‑paced environment, requiring strong prioritisation skills, the ability to manage conflicting demands, and a proactive approach to cyber security maturity uplift.
On a day-to-day basis, you’ll:
Strategic & Governance Responsibilities
- Take an active leadership role in IT Security and Governance across Council
- Develop, implement, and maintain a Cyber Security Framework aligned to Council strategy, legislative requirements, and industry standards
- Design and deliver a cyber security program of work suitable for an evolving and volatile digital landscape
- Evolve Council’s cyber risk management and governance frameworks
- Integrate cyber security into broader Council governance and business models
- Work with senior leaders to redesign and embed effective cyber governance practices
- Ensure alignment of cyber security objectives with Council’s strategic direction
Operational Responsibilities
- Provide hands‑on operational cyber security support, including monitoring, response, and mitigation activities
- Coordinate and manage cyber security incidents and response actions
- Support ongoing cyber risk assessments, vulnerability management, and remediation activities
- Assist in the development, testing, and maintenance of incident response and business continuity plans
- Report on cyber risks, threats, and security posture to senior leadership and the Executive

- Proven experience working in cyber security roles covering both strategic and operational responsibilities
- Strong understanding of cyber security governance, risk management, and compliance
- Experience developing cyber security frameworks, policies, and programs
- Ability to work independently as a sole cyber specialist within an organisation
- Demonstrated experience operating in fast‑paced environments with competing priorities
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including executive‑level engagement
