Data Visualization Specialist (Power BI)

Project Duration: 2 Year Contract

Work Site Details: 2 days/Week onsite in Tempe, AZ

Overview:

We are looking to hire a Power BI & SSRS migration specialist on a two-year contract. The role centers on retiring a legacy SSRS reporting platform by rebuilding reports in Power BI as paginated reports via Report Builder or as interactive dashboards where appropriate. This is technical, execution-driven work, meaning accuracy and functional equivalence come first. Strong SQL, DAX, and data validation skills are also essential, along with the ability to document your work and train internal staff.

Key Responsibilities:

• Migrate existing SSRS reports to Power BI Paginated Reports using Power BI Report Builder, ensuring functional equivalence, accuracy, and optimized performance
• Redesign selected SSRS reports into interactive Power BI dashboards, applying BI design standards and visual storytelling techniques
• Validate data accuracy and reconcile results with legacy SSRS outputs
• Collaborate with business analysts and data stewards to confirm business logic, metrics, and data definitions
• Apply Power BI best practices, including semantic model usage, row-level security (where applicable), parameterization, report navigation, and DAX optimization
• Document report logic, data sources, transformation logic, and user instructions
• Provide knowledge transfer and training to internal staff as needed

Required Skills:

• Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
• 3+ years of experience with SSRS and Power BI
• Hands-on experience building Power BI Paginated Reports (Power BI Report Builder), including SSRS conversion
• Experience developing interactive Power BI reports and dashboards
• Strong SQL skills, including query development and performance tuning
• Proficiency in DAX, Power Query, and Power BI semantic model integration
• Ability to analyze legacy SSRS reports and determine appropriate modernization approaches
• Experience working with enterprise BI standards and report lifecycle management
• Ability to interpret and validate business rules from existing reporting implementations
• Strong communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with Power BI Premium or Microsoft Fabric capacity
• Familiarity with shared Power BI datasets (semantic models)
• Knowledge of Power BI security models and row-level security
• Familiarity with Agile delivery and Azure DevOps
