Responsibilities:

As a Backend Java Engineer at Martian Logic, you drive the development of a high performance, reliable and scalable HRIS platform that powers the people and culture functions across thousands of Australian businesses.

• Design and build features and enhancements with Java and Spring Boot.
• Contribute to major platform initiatives within cross-functional teams.
• Deliver clean, structured, and highly testable code that follows best practices.
• Develop and maintain scalable RESTful services and core platform components.
• Manage SQL databases, design schemas, and execute database updates.
• Partner with Product teams to translate requirements into reliable technical solutions.
• Actively drive improvements in code quality and engineering practices across the team.

Skills & Experience:

• Extensive experience developing distributed web applications, with a deep understanding of Java and Spring Boot.
• A track record of successfully executing complex platform changes, with a strong focus on creative problem-solving, troubleshooting and debugging.
• Excellent English communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering, product and stakeholders in the wider working environment
• Practical experience with Elasticsearch or OpenSearch, including index management, complex search queries, and aggregations in Java/Spring Boot applications.
• In depth knowledge of SQL databases, performance optimisation and schema design.
• Experience with Web Services technologies such as REST and SOAP
• Experience building and maintaining SaaS applications with a focus on scalability, reliability, and delivering value to multiple customers on a shared platform.
• Advantageous: Hands-on experience working with Large Language Models (LLMs), building AI agents, prompt engineering, or integrating AI capabilities into applications (e.g.using OpenAI, Anthropic, Grok, LangChain, or similar frameworks).
