Role: Lead / Expert Java Developer (Contract)

Overview

We’re hiring a Lead / Expert Java Developer to support a major Financial Crime Prevention programme client. This is a hands-on contract role focused on building scalable, high-performance systems in a high-impact banking environment.

You’ll operate at expert level, contributing to both architecture and delivery, while supporting engineering standards across the team. The role suits someone comfortable working in distributed systems with high throughput and strong reliability requirements.

You’ll work closely with Product Owners, Architects, and Analysts to translate business needs into robust, production-ready solutions.

Responsibilities

• Design and build scalable, high-availability backend systems using Java and modern frameworks

• Act as a technical lead within the team, setting standards and supporting other developers

• Translate solution architecture into clean, maintainable, production-grade code

• Build and maintain event-driven and microservices-based systems

• Work closely with Product Owners and stakeholders to refine epics and user stories

• Contribute to technical decisions across tools, frameworks, and development practices

• Ensure performance, reliability, and scalability across services

• Maintain code quality through reviews, best practices, and clean coding principles

• Support CI/CD processes and modern development workflows

Requirements

• 7+ years Java development experience in production environments

• Strong experience with Spring Boot, Kafka, and SQL

• Proven experience building distributed systems with high concurrency and availability

• Solid understanding of microservices architecture and event-driven systems

• Experience with Domain-Driven Design and clean code principles

• Hands-on experience with AWS or similar cloud platforms

• Experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins

• Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes

• Strong communication skills and ability to lead technical discussions

• Fluent English and Finnish

Nice to have

• Experience with software security and secure coding practices

• TDD and testing frameworks such as JUnit

• Experience with HBase or Hadoop ecosystems

• Frontend exposure with Angular or JavaScript

• Experience using AI tools or integrating LLM-driven features into systems

• Previous experience mentoring or guiding developers
