Head Web Developer

Overview

At The Roadmap, we’ve built over 300 websites for Irish and UK businesses and are now expanding into Spain and beyond. We’re looking for a Head Web Developer to lead our website delivery team, manage technical quality across all builds, and support the next phase of our growth, from websites to custom apps and Web UI development.

This is a hybrid freelance role based in Madrid, joining a skilled, long-term team working on WordPress and Web UI projects. You’ll take ownership of website quality and development standards, collaborate closely with designers and developers, and help shape our growing platform. There’s a clear pathway to a full-time leadership role with more responsibility, autonomy, and long-term rewards.

What You’ll Do

You’ll work with our developers, designers, and project leads to:

• Oversee the quality, functionality, and reliability of all client websites.
• Manage, mentor, and review work of our junior web developer.
• Build and maintain WordPress + Elementor websites (and Shopify).
• Handle hosting, domains, DNS, backups, security, and plugin setup (SiteGround and Hostinger primarily).
• Manage custom tasks and troubleshooting, speed, layout, integration, database, and API issues.
• Investigate and fix website errors or malware issues, identify causes, and document prevention steps.
• Support account managers by diagnosing client-reported issues and providing clear, quick solutions.
• Contribute to internal projects: our Web UI, client dashboard, and automation systems (integrating tools like Google Workspace, Monday.com, Slack, etc.).
• Stay current with AI tools, automations, and web innovations that make development faster and smarter.
  
  

You Should Have

• 5+ years of hands-on development experience (WordPress/Elementor essential).
• Strong understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and ideally PHP (bonus if familiar with Python).
• Solid knowledge of hosting platforms like Siteground, WordPress, Elementor, CPanels, database management, and troubleshooting.
• Ability to audit, debug, and optimise websites without relying on online guides.
• Experience managing a small development team or reviewing others’ work.
• Excellent communication skills, able to explain issues clearly to non-technical teammates.
• Actively getting involved within AI, automation, and system efficiency.
• A proactive, reliable mindset, your team knows you’ll handle problems calmly and thoroughly.
