Be on the front line of cyber defence in a major government environment.
This is an exclusive opportunity to join a large and complex federal government department with a national remit and a strong focus on protecting critical information and services. Operating in a highly regulated environment, the organisation plays a key role in supporting Australia's economic, environmental and security objectives.
This role is Canberra‑based only and requires an NV1 security clearance. The initial contract is until September 2026, with the potential for two further 12‑month extensions, offering long‑term stability within a federal government cyber environment.
As a Cyber Security Analyst, you will support day‑to‑day cyber security operations, with a particular focus on incident investigation, alert response and operational documentation. Working within a protected environment, you will contribute to the effective operation of the department's SIEM and SIAM functions while collaborating closely with internal cyber teams, IT support areas and stakeholders across the business.
This is a hands‑on operational role suited to someone who enjoys working at the coalface of cyber security, responding to incidents, improving processes and helping refine how cyber services are delivered across the organisation.
To be successful, you will have at least two years' experience in a cyber security or ICT security role, ideally within a government or highly regulated environment. You will be comfortable working across operational cyber functions and communicating clearly with both technical and non‑technical users.
You will also bring:
- Experience investigating and responding to Level 1 and Level 2 security incidents within a SIEM environment
- Familiarity with SIAM processes, ticketing systems, and cyber operations queues
- Experience producing cyber security standard operating procedures, knowledge base articles, and technical user documentation
- Understanding of change management processes, particularly relating to firewall or proxy rule changes
- Exposure to ITIL‑aligned service management processes
- Experience with proxy administration, website whitelisting and troubleshooting access restrictions
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with end users and stakeholders
- NV1 security clearance and the ability to work onsite in Canberra are mandatory.
You'll secure a long‑term contract opportunity within a federal government cyber team, working on systems and environments that genuinely matter. This role offers hands‑on cyber operations experience, exposure to established security tooling and processes, and the chance to strengthen your career in government cyber security.
You will also receive:- A competitive hourly contract rate
- Long‑term extension potential
- The opportunity to build deeper experience in SIEM, incident response and cyber operations
- Ongoing support from a dedicated Hays Technology consultant
