The Story

PlayHQ is on a mission to unleash the life-changing power of community sport. They are reinventing sport technology, replacing decades of unreliable legacy systems with a seamless, mobile-first digital experience.

They have built a strong foundation for a digital revolution in community sports. Now they’re entering a phase of rapid upscaling as they deliver innovative customer experiences, making it easier, faster, safer and more accessible for administrators, volunteers, players and participants to organise and take part in the sports they love.

They are powering hundreds of millions in payments globally for sporting organisations as they digitise payments.

The Techy Bits

The PlayHQ platform consists of a fleet of microservices with multitenant event-driven architecture across their various products/sports. They work across a mix of React, TypeScript, Node, Golang, GraphQL, for web and React Native for their mobile apps, hosted on Docker and running on AWS.

The Role

As a Payment Engineering Lead at PlayHQ, you’ll be crucial in providing technical leadership, team management, strategic roadmap, and operational oversight of PlayHQ’s payment systems.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and oversee the architecture of their payment system
• Collaborate with the product team to define the roadmap for payment-related features and experiences
• Evaluate and select appropriate payment technologies, platforms, and payment systems
• Ensure smooth integration with external payment providers
• Ensure that their payment experiences are seamless, fast, and reliable for end-users
• Lead a team of engineers, fostering a positive, collaborative and high-performance culture
• Manage relationships with external payment processors, gateways, and financial institutions

What you Bring to the Role

You are a payments systems expert. We want you to have in-depth knowledge of payment processing technologies (e.g., Stripe, PayPal, Adyen), gateways, and platforms. This means you are also proficient in integrating with external third-party payment gateway and providers within B2B and B2C products. And a deep understanding of API design and integration.

You are the lead on system architecture and building scalable, reliable, and performant software systems, especially for high-transaction volume environments. Familiarity with microservices architecture and the ability to design fault-tolerant, distributed systems would be great.

Solid engineering background with BE languages such as Golang and or Node.js. Open to others. Some experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud) and infrastructure management (Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, Terraform).

You’re a leader who inspires, with the ability to mentor and coach engineers, providing technical guidance and building high-performing engineering teams.
