PHP Developer

Location: This is primarily a home based role with some requirements of travel to the London office.

We’re looking for a hands‑on Software Developer to join our Advanta business and help deliver, strengthen and modernise a business‑critical digital platform. This is not a narrow ticket‑delivery role — it’s an opportunity to take real ownership of engineering decisions, improve legacy systems, and contribute to a secure, scalable platform used across the business.

You’ll work across the full development lifecycle, collaborating closely with product and platform colleagues to deliver high‑quality, reliable solutions in an evolving environment.

What you’ll do

  • Design, build and enhance PHP‑based applications used in a production environment
  • Take ownership of features from requirements through to tested, supportable delivery
  • Work confidently within an existing codebase, improving and modernising legacy code over time
  • Write clean, secure and maintainable code, with performance and long‑term support in mind
  • Contribute to database development and optimisation using MySQL / MariaDB
  • Take part in code reviews, sharing best practice and raising quality across the team
  • Apply secure development principles, including OWASP guidance
  • Work collaboratively in an agile delivery environment
  • Support documentation, troubleshooting and platform resilience
  • Contribute to shared frameworks and standards that accelerate safe, consistent delivery

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • Commercial experience as a Software Developer, with strong PHP capability
  • Experience with PHP MVC frameworks (Laravel and/or CodeIgniter preferred)
  • Solid understanding of object‑oriented design, security and maintainability
  • Experience working with MySQL / MariaDB
  • Comfortable delivering production‑ready code in an agile team
  • Clear communicator with good engineering judgement

Desirable

  • Experience improving or refactoring legacy codebases
  • Exposure to automated testing, Docker or modern development tooling
  • Working knowledge of secure development standards (e.g. OWASP)
  • Experience in platforms supporting operational, financial or transactional processes

Why Join Us

You will work on a business-critical platform with real delivery impact, balancing enhancement, support and modernisation in a practical engineering environment. The role offers variety, ownership and the opportunity to strengthen both your technical capability and delivery judgement in a team that values quality, collaboration and continuous improvement.

  • Flexible Working Hours: Achieve a healthy work-life balance with our flexible working arrangements
  • Pension Plan: Secure your future with our generous pension scheme, with employer contributions up to 10%.
  • Time Off: Recharge and rejuvenate with 26 days of annual leave (plus bank holidays), and the option to buy or sell an additional 5 days!

We are fully committed to providing equal opportunities and building an inclusive workplace where a broad range of backgrounds and perspectives thrive. We embrace the many ways people think, learn, and experience the world—because we know that diverse minds drive innovation. So that we can support you to be your best during the application and interview process, please let us know if you have any specific requirements.
