Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals, and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth, and fostering an inclusive culture.
About The Role
We are now looking for an Android Developer to join our Commercial Development team on a 12-month fixed-term contract. The Commercial Development team is responsible for building systems that support advertising on theguardian.com and our mobile applications. Our systems are designed to sustain the Guardian's growth and financial sustainability by delivering a meaningful return on investment for advertisers, while maintaining the integrity and relevance of our advertising content for our readers. As an Android Developer, you will play a crucial role in enhancing our mobile advertising capabilities, ensuring seamless user experiences, and maintaining high-quality code standards.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Android development with proven experience in building and maintaining mobile applications. Proficiency in Kotlin is essential, with a good understanding of Java being advantageous. You should have experience working in collaborative development environments, familiarity with Agile methodologies, and a solid understanding of mobile app architecture and design principles. A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is preferred, but equivalent practical experience will also be considered. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to evolving project requirements are key attributes for success in this role.
Responsibilities
As an Android Developer, your primary responsibilities will include developing new features and functionality for The Guardian’s Android apps, as well as maintaining and improving existing components. You will be involved in coding, testing, and debugging to ensure high-quality deliverables. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—including designers, product managers, and other developers—is essential to align development efforts with business objectives. You will participate in code reviews, contribute to technical documentation, and ensure adherence to best practices and coding standards. Additionally, you will be expected to stay updated with the latest industry trends and integrate new technologies where appropriate to enhance app performance and user experience.
Benefits
We offer a competitive salary package along with comprehensive benefits including health insurance, pension scheme, and paid time off. Our organisation promotes continuous learning and development through training programs, workshops, and access to industry resources. You will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment that values innovation, collaboration, and diversity. We also support flexible working arrangements to help maintain a healthy work-life balance. Being part of the Guardian means contributing to meaningful journalism and digital innovation that impacts millions of readers worldwide.

We believe that diverse teams deliver better results and foster a more innovative and supportive workplace. We encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds and experiences who are passionate about making a difference through their work.
