Role overview

We are seeking a volunteer Java Software Engineer to help improve and maintain Barayamal's digital systems. This role suits someone who can work independently, communicate clearly, and contribute reliable backend engineering support in a remote team environment.

Important applicant requirement

Applicants must currently live in Australia. Applications from people who are not currently based in Australia will not be considered. Please only apply if you are currently residing in Australia and can volunteer remotely from Australia.

What you may work on

• Java backend development and maintenance

• API and integration work

• Debugging, testing and improving existing systems

• Documentation and technical handover notes

• Practical product improvements that support First Nations entrepreneurs and Barayamal operations

Useful skills

• Java development experience

• Spring or Spring Boot experience

• REST APIs, databases and backend services

• Git and basic software delivery practices

• Ability to write clear documentation

• Respectful, culturally safe communication

Volunteer arrangement

This is an unpaid volunteer role, not an employment relationship. Hours are flexible and remote, but applicants must currently live in Australia.
