Barayamal is a First Nations-owned and led Australian non-profit supporting Indigenous entrepreneurship through education, mentoring, networks and advocacy. We work with community, industry, government and university partners to build practical pathways for First Nations founders and ventures.

Role Description

Barayamal is seeking a Senior Java Software Engineer for a remote volunteer role. This role is unpaid and best suited to someone currently living in Australia who wants to contribute senior engineering skills to a purpose-driven First Nations organisation.

You will help design, review and improve software systems that support Barayamal's digital programs and operations. The work may include Java/Spring services, API design, integrations, documentation, technical reviews and mentoring less experienced contributors.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and build reliable Java/Spring Boot services and integrations

- Review architecture, code quality and technical trade-offs

- Support API design, data modelling and backend implementation

- Help improve reliability, security, testing and maintainability

- Collaborate remotely with Barayamal and volunteer contributors

- Document technical decisions clearly for handover and long-term maintainability

Required Qualifications

- Currently living in Australia

- 5+ years professional software engineering experience

- Strong Java experience, including modern Java and Spring Boot

- Experience designing backend services, APIs and database-backed applications

- Good understanding of testing, CI/CD, security basics and production support

- Able to work independently, communicate clearly and follow through on commitments

- Available to contribute remotely on a volunteer basis

Preferred Experience

- Microservices or event-driven architecture

- Cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud

- DevOps, observability or secure software delivery

- Experience with non-profit, social impact, Indigenous-led or community-focused work
