Backend Software Engineer

Protip UK is partnering with an established U.S. healthcare technology provider to deliver a next-generation Patient Life Management (PLM) platform. We’re assembling a lean, high-impact product engineering team to transform complex healthcare data into clear, compassionate digital experiences, ultimately improving outcomes for patients and caregivers across the entire continuum of care.

Contract snapshot

• Rate: $35 USD per hour (independent-contractor basis).
• Duration: 3 months, full-time (≈ 40 h/week).
• Work style: 100 % remote; collaborate largely in UTC+2 – UTC+4 core hours.
• Eligibility: Based in Ukraine or Ukrainian-speaking and resident elsewhere in Eastern Europe, with the legal right to work as an independent contractor from your country of residence.

What you’ll do

• Led the technical design and development of modular, cloud-native back-end services for a comprehensive digital health platform (content, consent, workflows, remote patient monitoring, medication and survey management, secure messaging, voice/video).
• Build secure, multi-region APIs and microservices on AWS using serverless and event-driven architectures, incorporating zero-trust security, OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect authentication, and healthcare-compliant authorisation.
• Design efficient SQL/NoSQL data models that manage large volumes of clinical and consumer data optimise analytics, and support federated data exchange.
• Integrate ML models, AI-based recommendation engines and personalisation systems to drive patient-specific insights.
• Establish robust monitoring, logging and automated testing pipelines; perform code reviews and troubleshoot complex production issues.
• Ensure continuous compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, FHIR and other healthcare privacy and security regulations.

What you bring

• 5+ years of commercial back-end development with proven experience.
• Deep proficiency in Java (Spring Boot) and Node.js/Express, plus strong expertise with AWS serverless and microservices patterns.
• Advanced knowledge of RESTful API design, database technologies (SQL and NoSQL), and secure data-exchange standards (FHIR, HL7).
• Demonstrated experience implementing zero-trust security, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect and protecting PHI at scale.
• Hands-on integration of back-end services with mobile app back-ends (Flutter, React Native) and third-party EHR platforms.
• Ukrainian speaking with professional-level English, enabling seamless collaboration with global teams.
• Self-starter who thrives in agile, ambiguous environments and drives best-practice engineering.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with event-driven architectures and message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Containerisation and DevOps/CI-CD pipelines using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Applied knowledge of ML/analytics in healthcare contexts.
• Prior experience working in healthcare, life sciences, or patient management solutions is a significant advantage.
