NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence newly established AI Laboratory is looking for innovative, mission-driven Data Scientist who combines deep AI expertise with strong communication and collaboration skills.


NATO StratCom COE’s AI Lab is an essential driver of the Alliance’s future readiness in the information environment. More than a research hub, it is a strategic enabler, advancing NATO’s edge in the cognitive warfare domain by delivering the research, prototypes, and expertise needed to further develop critical capabilities and maintain superiority in this domain. By addressing urgent challenges — from synthetic environments and digital twins to election safety, AI-powered training, and predictive decision-support — the Lab delivers validated prototypes and expert guidance, ensuring that NATO and its Allies can rapidly adopt AI solutions with a high operational impact.


Key responsibilities:

  • AI Development & Research – lead design and implementation of AI models for analysis, content generation, task automation, and decision support, developing sophisticated tools for detecting malicious content, building robust data pipelines, and creating predictive models and audience simulations to advance intelligence analysis.
  • Technical leadership – in collaboration with cross-functional teams, develop comprehensive tracking and analysis tools. Drive AI initiatives, develop risk-assessment methodologies, and research applications for synthetic environments, providing technical leadership that bridges research with practice.
  • Knowledge sharing & consultation – Advise NATO and Allies on AI in Strategic Communications, presenting findings to diverse audiences, contributing to publications and conferences, and supporting the Lessons Learned process to ensure research is applied in practice.
  • Required focus areas – advanced AI for NATO’s information space, including synthetic environments, audience simulation, AI risk assessment, and predictive analytics—enhancing Strategic Communications training, intelligence exploitation, and resilience against AI-driven threats.


Key requirements:

  • Master’s degree in computer science or related discipline.
  • Strong background in programming and/or data systems analysis (minimum 2 years).
  • Capability to translate data into concrete suggestions and/or actionable conclusions.
  • Prior experience with data science (e.g., data collection, analysis, or visualization) is a strong advantage.
  • A foundational understanding of disinformation, cognitive effects, strategic communication, information operations, and/or psychological operations.
  • Understanding of existing and potential interrelations between strategic communications as well as its components and existing and developing AI capabilities.
  • Fluency in several computer languages as well as machine learning, in particular large language models.
  • Demonstrated understanding of ethical and social implications of artificial intelligence.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
