About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Fullstack JAVA Developer (Freelance) to join our client’s high-impact team in Ghent for a 7-month project. Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain JAVA-based fullstack applications for environmental data management
• Translate functional analysis into robust technical solutions, ensuring high-quality code and architecture
• Collaborate with colleagues and end users to monitor and enhance solution quality
• Actively maintain and improve existing applications while building new features and systems
• Drive the adoption of an API-first strategy, contributing to API design and implementation
• Lead and coach development teams, fostering a culture of ownership and technical excellence
• Champion Agile methodologies, taking a leading role in iterative development and delivery
• Ensure rigorous testing through Test Driven Development and frameworks such as JUnit/AssertJ
• Utilize tools including Maven, Git, JIRA, and Confluence for efficient development and collaboration
• Engage with domain standards related to observations, measurements, sensors, and sampling
• Work on-site in Ghent at least 2 days per week, with flexibility for remote work on other days

Technical Skills & Experience

• Minimum 5 years of proven experience in JAVA-based application development (Senior level)
• Expertise in Spring Framework/Spring Boot
• Strong experience with JPA/Hibernate
• Proven experience with RESTful API development and API design
• Solid background in web technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript
• Experience with GWT (Google Web Toolkit)
• Proficiency in Test Driven Development and testing frameworks: JUnit, AssertJ
• Hands-on experience with build tools: Maven
• Database expertise: SQL, PostgreSQL, and PostGIS extension
• Version control with Git
• Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies, with the ability to take a leading role
• Experience with JIRA and Confluence
• Demonstrable experience in coding, testing, and debugging complex assignments
• Proven ability to lead and coach development teams
• Affinity with standards for observations, measurements, sensors, and sampling is a plus
• Experience within the Flemish Government context is a strong asset
• Domain knowledge of soil and subsurface is a bonus
• Relevant certifications or equivalent experience in Java/J2EE environments

Language Proficiency

• Fluency in Dutch at European CEFR level C2 is required

Other Requirements

• This is a freelance position with a project duration from 01/11/2025 to 31/07/2026 (7 months)
• 100% work regime, with approximately 1300 project hours
• Hybrid work: minimum 2 days per week on-site in Ghent, remainder remote
• Candidate selection is based on 50% quality and 50% price
• Project may be ordered in installments; number of days depends on profile and offer
