About the Role

Our client is seeking a Full Stack Developer to drive the optimization and automation of a critical environmental impact calculation tool. This freelance assignment is for 8 months, based in Aalst, Belgium, and offers the opportunity to shape digital solutions that directly support environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance. You’ll be at the heart of a project that transforms legacy processes into a robust, modern web application, empowering better water management for generations to come.

The project is pivotal in replacing outdated Excel/VBA modules with a scalable, secure, and user-friendly web application. Your work will enable our client to automate complex environmental assessments, ensuring that water quality standards are met and environmental objectives are achieved. The stakes are high: your code will help protect water resources, streamline compliance, and support climate adaptation efforts across the region.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Designing, developing, and optimizing a full-stack web application for environmental impact calculations
• Translating functional requirements into technical solutions, ensuring alignment with best practices and standards
• Building and maintaining robust RESTful APIs and service layers to automate step-by-step environmental assessment processes
• Developing modern, responsive front-end interfaces using HTML5, JavaScript, Angular, and TypeScript
• Implementing secure authentication and user access controls, integrating with central login services
• Ensuring seamless data integration with reporting tools such as Cognos and Power BI
• Driving quality through Test-Driven Development (TDD), including unit and integration testing (JUnit)
• Collaborating in an Agile environment, working closely with colleagues and end users to deliver high-impact solutions
• Coaching and leading other developers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement
• Ensuring code versioning and CI/CD practices using tools like GIT, Subversion, Maven, and Atlassian suite (Jira, Bamboo, Confluence)
• Contributing to technical analysis, debugging, and rapid problem-solving throughout the project lifecycle

Technical Skills

• 5+ years of demonstrable experience in full stack development
• Expertise in RESTful API design and implementation
• Strong back-end programming skills: Java, Spring Boot, Spring Framework, Test Driven Development
• Front-end development: HTML5, JavaScript, Angular, TypeScript
• Testing: JUnit, integration testing
• Experience with JPA/Hibernate for data persistence
• Proficiency with code versioning tools: GIT or Subversion
• Build and dependency management: Maven
• Familiarity with Atlassian tools: Jira, Bamboo, Confluence
• Experience with Docker (nice to have)
• Knowledge of Agile methodologies, with the ability to take a leading role
• Experience working within or for government agencies (nice to have)

Language Proficiency

• Fluency in Dutch at European CEFR level C2 is required

Other Requirements

• This is a freelance position for 8 months, with an estimated 1200 hours and a 100% work regime
• Hybrid work: At least one day per week onsite; remote work is possible
• Start date: To be determined by mutual agreement (target: May 2026)
• Development is carried out in an Agile environment
• Applicants must use their own company license for Office software (LibreOffice can be provided as an alternative)
