About the Role

We are seeking an Expert PHP Developer (Freelance) to join our client’s digital transformation journey in Ghent. You will play a pivotal role in building, optimizing, and future-proofing mission-critical platforms that empower thousands of users in a complex academic environment. This is a freelance assignment for 24 months, offering you the opportunity to drive real impact at scale.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Designing, deploying, and optimizing Symfony-based platforms to support evolving academic needs
• Developing, maintaining, and enhancing codebases in PHP frameworks, including Symfony and Drupal
• Managing and supporting the Symfony-based educational platform SCONE
• Implementing and maintaining integrations via REST APIs
• Configuring, managing, and optimizing multiple Drupal Content Management Systems
• Leading and coaching development teams, fostering a culture of ownership and technical excellence
• Driving Agile development practices and taking a leading role in iterative delivery
• Ensuring robust version control and CI/CD processes using Git and Jenkins
• Collaborating with stakeholders to deliver high-impact solutions in a complex university context

What We’re Looking For

• Minimum 8 years of proven experience in PHP development, with deep expertise in Symfony and Drupal
• Demonstrated ability to develop, operationalize, and maintain Drupal CMS environments
• Extensive experience with Symfony-based platforms, including hands-on work with SCONE (nice to have)
• Strong track record in building and integrating API platforms
• Mastery of version control (Git) and CI/CD tools (Jenkins)
• Experience leading development teams and coaching fellow developers
• Fluency in Agile methodologies, with the ability to take a leading role in sprints and delivery cycles
• Proven ability to code, test, and debug efficiently and independently
• Experience working within academic or complex organizational environments (preferred)
• Native-level Dutch proficiency (CEFR C2 required)

Other Requirements

• This is a freelance position (100% allocation) for a 24-month project based in Ghent
• Remote work is possible, with on-site presence as required by the project
• Assignment is part of a multi-year framework agreement
• Start date: 01/01/2026 | End date: 31/12/2027
