About the Role

Our client’s innovation team is on a mission to redefine the media experience for millions by harnessing the power of personal data vaults and AI. As a Fullstack Developer (Freelance), you’ll join a select group of builders shaping the next generation of digital media, privacy, and user empowerment. This is a freelance assignment based in Brussels, with a project duration of 35 months and the flexibility to work remotely.

The stakes are high: you’ll help design and prototype solutions that set new standards for privacy, transparency, and user control in the digital age.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop web applications and front-end components using React or similar frameworks.
• Build robust back-end services (Node.js or equivalent) and integrate with external APIs, including Solid pods and AI models.
• Architect and implement a data model for personal media profiles, ensuring seamless integration with Solid-based data vaults.
• Create proof-of-concept prototypes and demonstration apps to validate research insights and technical assumptions.
• Collaborate closely with UX researchers, project leaders, and external partners (startups, universities, and more).
• Independently select and justify technology stacks and architectures, documenting and communicating decisions to multidisciplinary teams.
• Translate research questions and user experience findings into working, innovative software prototypes.
• Champion responsible use of personal data in AI applications, ensuring privacy and transparency at every step.

Technical Skills

• Minimum 5 years of demonstrable experience as a fullstack developer on complex projects.
• Expertise in React and Node.js (or similar web technologies).
• Hands-on experience with API integration and AWS configuration.
• Proven experience with Solid technology and personal data vaults (Solid pods).
• Strong interest or experience in AI/ML development (Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or integrating AI APIs).
• Experience with Python for AI/ML frameworks.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and coach development teams.
• Proficiency in coding, testing, and debugging in fast-paced, innovation-driven environments.

Other Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in computer science, software engineering, or a related field.
• Experience working on innovation projects with unclear technical end results but clear practical goals.
• Proactive, solution-oriented mindset with the ability to thrive in unstructured, dynamic environments.
• Ability to explain complex technical decisions to multidisciplinary teams (UX, product, development).
• Experience in the media sector is a strong plus.
• Demonstrable knowledge and experience of Agile development methodologies, with the ability to take a leading role.
• Language requirement: Dutch at European CEFR - level C2.
